IIMA students work on theatre model

Published by at

The faculty members of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) may be stressed over the imbroglio with the government over their pay packages, but the students of the premier business school are reaching out in terms of campus activities more than ever.
A successful garba night during Navratri was followed closely by a three-day period play Badi Bua — Baap Re Baap at Natarani over the weekend. The play has received good reviews and response from audiences, not to mention that from the IIMA community itself. A large number of senior professors, students and administrative staff poured in to Natarani for the play; while for Mallika Sarabhai, it was an opportune moment to give back to her alma mater.
With the garba night and the theatre activities, IIMA is now in a league with the Mudra Institute of Communication (MICA), National Institute of Design (NID) and Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT). MICA's theatre initiative, Sankalp, is particularly popular among youngsters in Ahmedabad.
"As much as they form an opportunity to reach out to the local community in Ahmedabad, which we are part of, these events provide a splendid platform to learn real-time management, out of the box," an organiser of the IIMA garba said.
The institute will also host another two events on its campus, where management abilities will be tested: Insight, the marketing fair in November, and Sattvik, the organic food festival in the winter.
As for the play, Badi Bua… was found wanting in the crispness of the script, but not in the performance of the students. Quite likely up to their necks in management assignments, it is indeed commendable that they have brought out such a fine play. Like Sankalp, IIMA students want to make this a regular affair. Whether they succeed or not remains to be seen. But in the mean time, for the entertainment-starved citizens of Ahmedabad, the institute has opened a few more doors for recreation.
